Posted by David Watson . on June 21, 2013

Our world is full of many spectacular views which are either created from natural formations or are popularized as man made masterpieces. However, many amateur and professional photographers will want to know which are classed as the most inspiring and interesting views that you can see through a lens.

This blog will explore some of the most breathtaking views that you can see through a lens so be sure to get your camera ready as we take a trip to some of the most amazing places in the known universe.

Chile: the Marble Caves

Marvelled as the most remarkable cave network in the world, the remote marble caves in Chile are widely seen as one of nature’s greatest views. Found in Patagonia in Chile, these caves lie with the General Carrera Lake which is known as South America’s second biggest freshwater lake. This distinctive geological structure is made up of tunnels and caverns which are constructed from marble. They were shaped by wave patterns approximately 6000 years ago which left this incredible and intricate pattern of water-filled tunnels. The reflection of the water on the beautiful marble walls treats visitors to a dazzling light display; perfect for getting that dramatic photograph. Although the marble caves are remote and therefore are hard to get to, you would certainly be naive to miss out on an opportunity to see such an impressive spectacle.

Rome: the Sistine Chapel Ceiling

For our next stop, we head to Rome and an extravagant depiction of the capabilities of man and artistic interpretation. Michelangelo is known by many as “the original Renaissance man” and is one of the most iconic sculptors and painters this world has ever known. Perhaps his most iconic work can be seen as one of his most beautiful and inventive. Michelangelo was commissioned by the Vatican to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with images from the Bible and scriptures in a fresco style. Fresco is testing technique to master as it means that the artist paints directly onto wet plaster which binds to leave the paint as part of the ceiling surface. The area is approximately 5000 square foot in size and it took the great Italian artist four years to paint over 400 figures on the ceiling. For any passionate photographer and art lover, this ceiling is astounding and you can easily spend hours lost in the incredible detail of each individual scene.

The Northern Hemisphere: Aurora Borealis

Now we move onto the Northern hemisphere where an incredible natural phenomenon occurs at certain times of the year. The Northern lights or aurora borealis is a natural light display which is created when energy driven particles collide with atoms in the thermosphere. These high energy collisions result in a release of photons which creates a beautiful greenish glow that sometimes can be seen with a hint of red in each curtain-like strand of light. The aurora borealis can be found in the polar region of the Northern hemisphere. It is best to travel in a northerly direction in the winter months from Canada or Alaska to see it.

Space: the View of Earth

Humanity has always been fascinated by the beautiful and destructive power of space; yet we have been equally intrigued by our own planet which is arguably the most beautiful natural thing in our known universe. With the advancement in technology, we are now able to appreciate the beauty and wonderment of satellite images which showcase our incredible home. The first time that we saw Earth through the lens from outer space was in 1947 when we were shown a dim black and white image which had been photographed by a simple 35 millimetre movie camera. Fourteen years later, the first man to travel into space, Yuri Gagarin said that Earth “was a magnificent picture”. Then on the 7th December, 1972, the infamous ‘Blue Marble’ image was taken which was the first shot of earth in its entirety. The insight that we receive about the planet which we inhabit is extraordinary and the beauty of these images can only begin to showcase the magnificence of this brave new world.
