Could DeX Be The Future Of PC?

It’s no secret that Apple has been dominating the consumer market for over a decade, but Samsung and Android have paired up, and might have just the right thing to turn it all around. I’ve become a huge fan of Samsung products in recent months and though I hadn’t really been interested in trying DeX but one night whilst enjoying some CBD edibles with a dear friend, they convinced me that I had to give it a go.

If you are, like I was, wholly unaware of what DeX is, allow me to provide you with a brief overview. Dex is a program on Samsung phones that essentially allows you to plug the device into a screen and allow you to use your phone as a desktop. You also have the option to either use your phone as a keyboard, connect a Bluetooth keyboard, or even plug a keyboard into the USB-C slot on your phone. There are a ton of applications that are adapted to work with DeX, and though some programs are not yet supported, I have no doubt that they will be in the near future.

The User Experience

So, now that you know what DeX is, let’s talk about the actual user experience and how I first came into contact with this awesome operating system. My friend Gilroy, who we all call Gil, had come over to bring me some CBD edibles. I was feeling down after my ex-fiance moved out abruptly and flew back home to Europe. She said she needed to figure out who she was but would be coming back. Now the world is quarantined and I think she’s happy about it. Anyway, Gil, being the good friend he is, came over with a bag full of my favorite CBD treats in an attempt to cheer me up. He had everything from gummies, to tinctures. I was still completely broken, but incredibly grateful.

Gil and I sat in my living room and proceeded in unintriguing, underwhelming banter about anything but my actual situation. It was mildly soothing I think, but I can’t really be sure. Gil is a committed friend but he’s not the best at cheering people up. I think it’s because his cat died when he was a baby. Even though Gil only knew the cat from the eyes of a newborn, he was forever traumatized. After a slow, dull series of questions and half answers, Gil’s eyes lit up. “I forgot to show you something rad”. Gil pulled out his Samsung phone and started pulling something up.

The Not-So-Quick Trip To The Store

Gil has some strange affinities so I was both worried and intrigued to see what he had to show me. “Well..” I prodded. Gil looked up from his phone and told me to go in my room and get a USB-C cable. Upon my return Gil informed me that it needed to be a high-speed USB-C cable. “Sorry Gil, this is what I’ve got.”

Gil started to get unruly as he usually does when things aren’t incredibly convenient. He immediately laid into me about how only a fool would live in a place without having a high speed USB-C cable and how dangerous it was and what if this.. And what if that… After Gil took his meds and his tangent subsided we decided to take a calming walk down the street to go buy one for about $12. Gil said he knew where we were going, but one block turned to two, and two blocks turned to five miles, and before I knew it we had walked 7.36 miles to a janky electronics store.

I was sure they wouldn’t have the cable we were looking for and that Girl would certainly have another episode and get hauled off again. “At least I can probably ask the cops for a ride home again” I thought, but low and behold, they had it. Gil gets just as excited as he does angry, so I did my best to calm him down, threw some money at the clerk, grabbed the cable, and we were on our way.

User Experience Take #2

After a grueling 14+ mile walk, and a fair bit of Gil-wrangeling, I was ready to finally give this Samsung DeX thing a try. But first, CBD time. I normally only take two gummies at a time like it says on the package, but I went for it. I ate them like any other gummy and it felt good. Not only is CBD a great source of cannabinoids, it’s totally non-toxic so it wasn’t a risky endeavor or cry for help, CBDfx just makes some really delicious gummies and Gil had stressed me out to the fin.

Finally, Gil went into the back room, grabbed my spare monitor, and fired up the DeX. I was completely blown away. It was like having a touch-screen desktop. It actually turns your phone into a computer! Yes, you have to plug in a cable or two, but why on earth would you buy an entire laptop if you can switch your phone into one almost instantly. DeX is probably going to take over the world, but in the meantime, I’m almost certain it will dominate Apple in the consumer market in the coming years.
