It’s one thing to get your bills paid on time, but it’s another when you find out that you haven’t just paid for this month’s account – but you’ve paid enough to cover next month’s, as well!
On the surface, this is the ultimate in convenience. Imagine: you don’t have to worry about paying next month’s bill, and that saves you time and money!
However: what if you made a mistake when you paid that bill? What if, in the case of a payment made online – and there have been many horror stories about those lately – you entered the wrong amount for payment? “Stressful” only begins to describe your situation.
Here, we talk about how you can request a refund from AT&T if you’ve overpaid for your monthly internet subscription.
How Did You End Up Overpaying in the First Place?
- An over-payment occurs in any of the following situations:
An accidental over payment in that you entered the wrong amount during an online transaction; - AT&T may have mistakenly overcharged you for service add-ons that you did not sign up for; or
- There may have been promotional discounts you availed of at the time but failed to appear in your statement of accounts at the time you paid your bill.
In most cases, any surplus payment may be applied to your next billing statement to decrease the amount you need to pay the following month. However, based on the terms of AT&T’s customer service agreement, the subscriber is entitled to a refund. Note that this refund is, of course, subject to several set processes and the approval of AT&T.
Requesting for Refunds
Getting a refund is also dependent on the status of your subscriber account with AT&T:
- For Active Accounts, the company usually applies over payments to the next billing statement to defray the total cost. But in the case of accidental over payments or unapplied discounts, those with active accounts need to contact the company online, visit the nearest AT&T store or service center in their vicinity, or call 800-288-2020 to file their request.
- On the other hand, for Canceled AT&T Accounts, any over payment or residual account balances are refunded after 45 days. This refund is dependent on any adjustments made by the company.
How You’ll Receive Your Refund
This is dependent on how you paid your bill:
- There is usually a 14-day holding period for electronic bank drafts or checks before the refund is released. If you need the money earlier than that, send AT&T a bank statement showing that the transaction has cleared along with a letter from your bank stating that there are no disputes related to the transfer.
- For online payments, you can request a refund via your bank’s website or transaction portal. In which case, there will be a 14-day holding period before the amount is credited to your account.
- For credit card payments, A&T will credit the amount to the card/account you used to pay your bill.
