The purpose of a website is essentially to bring in visitors. These visitors are the ones who will enjoy your website thus giving its purpose, but they will also be the ones who provide you with your means of monetization. By bringing visitors to your site you gain an audience – ‘eyeballs’ – and those eyeballs are very interesting to marketers (or to you if you have something to sell…).
However, you would be mistaken to think of visitors as simply the ‘goal’. Your web traffic should also be seen as a means to that end in a way. Web traffic can be self-perpetuating, and it can also be a vital tool. If you can make proper use of your visitors, then you’ll find that you can create an almost symbiotic relationship between your site and the people who visit it. By putting your visitors to work, they can help to bring in more visitors and boost your site to create a snowball effect that eventually becomes perpetual. Here’s how to start putting your visitors to better use…
Ask for Help
One of the best ways to get more from your visitors is to simply try asking them for help. This is something that a lot of webmasters are seemingly reluctant to do, but it can actually be good for your marketing as it gives your fans a chance to feel like ‘part’ of something. At the same time, when asking for help from your visitors means getting an idea or an opinion means going straight to the source – why not ask the people you design for what it is that they’d most appreciate?
Your visitors can also be fantastic as a source of marketing – ask them to spread the word, give away some promotional t-shirts, and they will help you to make your site known across the web. They can even help to fund your site and particular projects for your site through crowd funding (or through a simple donate button).
Content
Your visitors can also contribute content for your site so that they literally become its authors. They can do this by submitting articles knowing that they will be published as useful content, or simply by discussing things on a forum or a comments section. This way they can create more content for the Search Engines to index and answer questions that your other visitors may have potentially had.
Motivating the Troops
There are many different ways that your visitors can help you to grow your site and promote it around the web, but the trick is in getting them to want to. Make sure that you create a site that’s worth supporting, that you make sure your visitors feel involved, and that you give them plenty of incentive to keep coming back. Answer questions and feedback and don’t be afraid to show your personality through your writing. That way you will win a legion of loyal fans, and this is a fantastic asset to put to work propelling your site to new heights.
