World Design Capital 2014 is the Mother City, herself, Cape Town. South Africa’s thriving port town, situated between the mountain and the sea is a design-lover’s dream destination and now that the city is embracing its new title, the city is exuding design.

The WDC is a city promotion project by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design to recognize and award accomplishments made by cities around the world in the field of design. Cape Town follows in the steps of Torino, Italy, Seoul in South Korea and Helsinki in Finland, which have all held the honor. And rightly so! A blend of colonial elegance, African flair and surrounded by natural beauty, buildings and structures in Cape Town are ready to be enhanced by the imaginations architects and designers.

According to the organizers, the aim is to put Cape Town on the map not just as a top destination for tourists but also a must-see destination for design funds. And the benefits will be twofold. Local Cape Town designers will be showcased to the world and much of the design is targeted at uplifting the impoverished in the city. Cape Town is using the status as a tool for development and transformation.

The theme lends itself to this: Live Design, Transform Life. And even international aid organizations have gotten involved, investing in local projects for the up-liftment of the community. You could place your bets at jackpotjoycasino.com, but a guarantee is that this particular Design Capital is going to make a difference in people’s lives beyond the aesthetic.

Of course, design and transformation can be slow going, but organizers say locals will see the changes quickly. From large signature events to small community-based projects, the organizers want Capetonians involved and international visitors to get a different view on the city.

In addition to the building and construction currently ongoing around the city – from green skyscrapers to township theaters built in shipping containers – there are also workshops aimed at all level of designers. “There will be an energy, a vibe in the city, where everybody is just celebrating design and expressing themselves. It’s an opportunity to think differently and be slightly disruptive,” said one of the organizers.

Design Capital 2014 Cape Town is about more than just inspiring through design, it’s about entirely transforming lives through it.
