5 Tips for Anyone Looking to Start an eCommerce Business

Posted by David Watson . on October 30, 2019

Having an eCommerce site is a great way to make money: Google is the new Manhattan, and instead of traveling into the mall these days, savvy shoppers browse whichever shoppes they’re in the mood of visiting – from the comfort of their couch. So, if you’re looking to make it big, no need to spend millions on designing a breathtaking brick and mortar store that won’t make passersby stop and stare (since they’re all too busy on their phones to notice). Instead, invest on an online site. But you have to do it right. If it’s done in an unsophisticated manner, your site won’t help you at all. To assist you in creating a website or updating your website so that you’ll be in the range of vision of your customers (i.e. you’ll be ranking in search engines), we’ve compiled a list of tips. Read on for details.

#1: What Are You Passionate About?

Some people are passionate about literally anything. They care about trees being chopped in California, kids being shot in Texas, people being hurt by hurricanes in Florida, and seniors who need to use suction bars because their landlords don’t let them use wall-mounted ones and only allow use of suction cup shower handles. Such people will have no problem selling medical supplies that will help seniors or organic products to better the environment. However, for people who aren’t as passionate about such causes, or who weren’t born with a burning ambition to achieve in life and won’t let anything bring them down, it’s better off to find something simple, or even a hobby,  which you enjoy and are passionate about. Do you like cooking? Are you a baseball fan? Are you very fashion conscious and love being up-to-date on the latest styles? Figure out what you’re passionate about, and then start working on the practical aspect of turning that passion into a business.

2: Make Sure You’re Filling a Need

Are competitors who sell the same product doing well? Is the item you’re planning on selling something that’s fast-growing, or slowly sinking? For example, you may be a stamp aficionado, but if UPS is barely making it through, you probably wouldn’t be able to earn a living by opening a stamp store. If you’re thinking of making an app, be sure there isn’t another one that’s very similar, and if you’re looking to sell something, make sure there’s a solid reason for customers to choose you over the competition.

#3: Design the Navigation

Try to make it as easy as possible. The faster and quicker it’ll take customers to find the product they need, the better it is for both you and them. Make the site navigation as user friendly as you can.

#4: Get a Talented Web Designer

Sure, you can do it yourself. But if you want this to look like a “real” site, you’ll need a “real” graphic designer. When you come onto the site, the first thing that catches your eye is the graphics, and if the web design comes across as amateurish, potential customers may think twice before purchasing.

#5: Learn the Law

Before you started to drive, you learnt the laws of driving in your state. It works the same way in business: Before you start, you gotta know the law so you won’t get in trouble because of it. Especially when considering asset protection for both you and your business. While that may feel intimidating, simply setting up an LLC (either on your own or through an LLC service) goes a long way.

We wish you the best of luck in all your business endeavors!
